A teen is in jail after police say he fired shots at a girl in a Dothan park because she didn’t give him her phone number.

Officers responded about 7:30 p.m. Friday to Solomon Park on Choctaw Street on a report of shots fired.

Dothan police Lt. Scott Owens said officers saw a vehicle leaving with several juveniles inside.

They stopped the vehicle and found guns inside. They also recovered fresh spent shell casings in the park.

Fortunately, Owens said, no one was injured. A 17-year-old boy was taken into custody for questioning.

Witnesses and the suspect told police he was angry at the target of the shooting because she had not given him her phone number at school earlier that day. At Solomon Park, he saw the victim with her boyfriend and opened fire with a 9mm handgun.

The teen is being charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree attempted assault. He is being held in the Houston County Jail.

“The Dothan Police Department takes this type of conduct very seriously and will hold any person engaging in this type of conduct accountable according to the law,’’ Owens said. “It is a miracle that no one was injured or killed by the actions of this suspect.”
