In the early hours of August 28, 2024, a tragic accident on Louisiana Highway 23 resulted in the death of a young pedestrian from Baton Rouge.
At approximately 4:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian just north of Seatrain Road in Plaquemines Parish.
The incident claimed the life of 19-year-old Kyrin Dotson, a Baton Rouge resident.
Preliminary reports indicate that Dotson was attempting to cross LA 23 when the accident occurred.
According to the investigation, a 2004 Toyota Tundra was traveling northbound in the left lane of LA 23 when it collided with Dotson, who was walking eastward across the northbound lanes.
The impact occurred in the left lane, where Dotson was struck by the oncoming vehicle.
Tragically, Dotson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, whose identity has not been released, was reportedly wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured in the collision.
As standard procedure, toxicology samples were obtained from both the driver and Dotson to determine if impairment was a factor in the crash. The results of these tests are still pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.
This incident underscores the persistent dangers that pedestrians face, particularly when navigating roadways in low-light conditions. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be prevented by adhering to essential safety practices.
