Barbara Nicklaus, known as the “First Lady of Golf,” has been chosen as the honoree for the 2025 Memorial Tournament, a fitting recognition of her remarkable contributions to the sport and her philanthropic endeavors. As announced on Sunday, this honor places her among the esteemed individuals celebrated at the Memorial Tournament, a prestigious event established by her husband, Jack Nicklaus, in 1976.

Barbara Nicklaus was born Barbara Jean Bash on February 28, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, to Stanley and Helen Bash. She graduated from North High School in Columbus in 1957 and pursued nursing at Ohio State University. It was during her first week at Ohio State that she met Jack Nicklaus, leading to their marriage on July 23, 1960. Throughout Jack Nicklaus’s illustrious golfing career, Barbara was a steadfast supporter, playing a crucial role in his success. Her influence extended beyond her husband’s career, contributing significantly to the establishment of Muirfield Village Golf Club and the Memorial Tournament.

Barbara Nicklaus has also been deeply involved in charitable work. As the chair of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, she has made substantial contributions to children’s health. Alongside Jack and the PGA Tour, she launched Play Yellow, a campaign that has raised over $130 million for the Children’s Miracle Network of hospitals. The Memorial Tournament itself has generated more than $52 million for charitable causes in central Ohio and beyond.

Moreover, Barbara played a pivotal role in founding the PGA Tour Wives Association in 1988, furthering fundraising efforts within the golf community. Her dedication to philanthropy has earned her numerous accolades, including the USGA’s Bob Jones Award in 2015 and the PGA of America Distinguished Service Award in 2019, honors that her husband Jack received in 1975 and 2000, respectively. Barbara Nicklaus’s impact on golf and her philanthropic legacy will be celebrated at the 2025 Memorial Tournament, honoring her exemplary dedication and lasting influence on the sport and society.
