The nation’s first public arts conservatory was founded in 1963 under the name North Carolina School of the Arts by then-Governor Terry Sanford. The institution is composed of five professional schools: the School of Music, the School of Drama, the School of Filmmaking, the School of Design & Production (which includes a Visual Arts High School Program), and the School of Dance.

About Mascot

Despite the absence of any officially recognized sports teams at UNCSA, the Fighting Pickle serves as the school mascot.[25] An annual touch-football game between a Wake Forest University fraternity squad and a UNCSA team was the major sporting event of the early 1970s.

The football team organized a competition to select their mascot in 1972. With the motto “Sling ‘Em By The Warts!” the mascot was formerly known as just “The Pickles,” but it was later changed to “The Fighting Pickles.” In the spring of 2010, UNCSA conducted a competition to choose the new official “Fighting Pickle” mascot. Voting and design submissions were open to all current and former teachers and staff members as well as students and alumni. The winner was announced in the Student Union cafeteria on May 21, 2010.

His family will make an announcement at the appropriate time regarding his obituary and funeral plans.
