Death: Step-uncle arrested in fatal shooting of grandfather in Miami


Step uncle of  girl who witnessed her grandfather being shot to death in her Miami apartment has been charged with murder, according to authorities. Carlos Manuel Rosales, 38, is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Luciano Matute, 62, Miami Police said Friday. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and died of his injuries.

The incident took place in Little Havana on Thursday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. on the 700 block of Southwest 5th Street. When police arrived on the site, they discovered Matute suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest on the building’s stairwell. Miami Police officials stated that on Friday, 38-year-old Carlos Manuel Rosales is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 62-year-old Luciano Matute.

A man was observed ascending the stairs to the apartment in surveillance footage. A few moments later, the grandfather is seen falling down the same set of stairs and remaining still at the bottom. According to officers, Matute’s granddaughter called her mother to let her know there was another person inside the flat when she was alone herself. After receiving a call from the mother, Matute went to the residence to investigate before confronting the suspect, according to the police.

The shooting suspect, according to the police, drove off in a white Toyota pickup. According to an arrest record, the truck’s tag was detected by a license plate reader and it returned to Rosales.

Rosales later admitted to the killing, according to the police. Rosales is the girl’s step-uncle and is wed to the juvenile’s mother’s sister, detectives have learned. She was also detained on suspicion of lewd and lascivious molestation on a kid and exhibition on a child, according to police, following the investigation that the Special Victims unit conducted in connection with an unrelated shooting.
