In Loving Memory of Jerry West
The Los Angeles Clippers confirmed on Wednesday that Jerry West, the iconic Basketball Hall of Famer whose silhouette appears on the NBA emblem, has passed away. He was eighty-six. The Los Angeles Clippers confirmed the passing of Jerry West, 86, one of the best players in NBA history and an icon of the Los Angeles Lakers. West is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in NBA history as well as virtually indisputably its greatest executives.
West became a star basketball player at the University of West Virginia after being born in West Virginia in 1938. Despite losing in the Final Four, he was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player in 1959 after leading the Mountaineers to the National Championship Game. Oscar Robertson, his Olympic colleague and another NBA icon, was the only player to go before him when the Lakers selected him with the second overall pick in 1960.
Following the team’s relocation to Los Angeles, he and Elgin Baylor became the first truly great Lakers. In each of his 14 NBA seasons, West made it to the All-Star Game and led the Lakers to nine Finals appearances. Sadly, West’s Lakers were founded during the height of Bill Russell’s Boston Celtics dominance. Despite losing in 1969, West was so good that he received Finals MVP, despite the Lakers’ miserable 1-8 record in the Finals throughout his tenure.
